Chapter 5
Sunday arrived with warm weather and abundant sunshine. Sticky made a big breakfast of pancakes and sausage for her birthday, and she was so thankful for these two men who took her in and cared of her, not expecting any sort of payment. Cliff said the blessing and thanked God for their food and for Sondra being with them. "Amen," she agreed, taking a bite of sausage. "This is so good, Sticky. Thank you."
"You're welcome." She looked at Cliff when he reached down to the floor and lifted up a wrapped package.
"Happy birthday from Sticky and I. It's not much, but we hope you like it."
Sondra's eyes widened. "I didn't expect a gift. You didn't have to do that."
Cliff chuckled along with Sticky. "Here, open it. We can't wait to see if you like it."
She put her fork down, took the present, and eagerly tore it open. "Oh my goodness, it's beautiful!" She pulled out a white, knitted shawl. She scooted her chair back, stood, and draped it around her shoulders. She twirled around, hearing Cliff and Sticky both laughing.
Sticky grinned at her when she stopped moving and wiped a tear away from his eyes. "You like it?"
"I love it! It is so beautiful and so delicate! I'll wear it to church this morning." She walked over and gave Sticky a kiss on the cheek and a hug, then hurried over to Cliff. She bent down and kissed his cheek and hugged him too, surprised when he took her hand and kissed the back of it.
"A beautiful gift for a beautiful woman."
Sondra's heart skipped a beat as he gazed into her eyes. The color of his eyes never ceased to mesmerize her every time she looked into them. They seemed to change colors at will. She took the shawl off, laid it over the rocking chair by the fireplace, and returned to the table to eat. "Will Mack be at church?" The thought had been worrying her all night and morning. She didn't want him to make a scene in church.
Cliff chuckled. "Nope. He doesn't go to church because many people there know what he's like and he knows it. You don't have to worry about that. If you two are done eating, I'm going to go hitch up the buckboard."
Sondra ate the last two bites of her eggs, rose from the table, and put her dish in the pan of water in the sink. She grabbed Cliff's too. "I'll be out in a couple of minutes. I want to check my hair."
"Sticky, we got us a woman in the house. This may be the first time we've ever been late for church."
Sondra placed her hands on her hips and glared at him. "I'm not one of those women. I'll only be a couple minutes." Her breath hitched in her throat when he grinned at her, tipped his hat, and walked out the door. She ran to her room. There was no way she was going to make them late for church.
